Why integration is more important than ever

Robbert Oskam

We live in an age where everything and everyone is connected. You order something online, receive a confirmation email, track the package in an app, and maybe even pay via your phone. Without you even realizing it, all kinds of systems are working together in the background. We call this integration: connecting different systems so…

But why is integration so important these days? And what does that have to do with data, understanding your business information, and the rise of the cCloud? We explain it all in this blog!

The world has changed thanks to the cloud

Not so long ago, most companies ran everything on their own servers, in their offices. One central system that contained everything. But those days are largely behind us. More and more organizations are working with cloud applications: systems that are not stored on your own computer, but run on the internet. Think of tools such as SAP Field Service Management, Salesforce, Office 365, Shopify, SAP Public Cloud, and so on.

The cloud offers many advantages: flexibility, scalability, working from any location. But there is also a downside: because you now use all kinds of different applications, your data is spread across all those systems. You no longer have one place where everything comes together. This makes it more difficult to maintain an overview.

And that’s where integration comes in. Precisely because you work with all kinds of cloud solutions, there is a growing need to link those systems together and bring your data together. Only then can you regain control of what is going on in your organization.

Integration brings your data together

Organizations often use multiple tools simultaneously: a web store, inventory management, accounting, customer service, etc. These systems all contain data, but without integration, that information remains locked away in separate “islands.”

When you integrate these systems, you ensure that they communicate with each other. Are you selling something through your webshop? Then your inventory management system will see that immediately. Has an invoice been paid? Then your accounting department will know right away. This is how data flows throughout your entire organization.

And why is that important? Because data is your organization’s gold. Every action, every contact moment, every sale provides information. But that data is only truly valuable if you can understand and use it. Integration brings everything together and gives you insight into the bigger picture.

Imagine: you suddenly notice that a certain product in your webshop is selling very well, but your stock is dwindling faster than expected. Thanks to integration, you can see this at a glance and reorder in time. Or you notice that customers are contacting you more often with the same question with integrated systems, you can see this more quickly and proactively make adjustments.

Why understanding data makes all the difference

Data-driven working means making decisions based on facts, not feelings. And that has become increasingly important. Because with the cloud, digitization, and the pace at which everything is changing, you can’t afford to lag behind.

With effective integrations, you can extract relevant data from all your systems, combine it, and gain an overview. What is working well? Where are the bottlenecks? Where are the opportunities? This insight helps you respond faster and better.

The downside of integration

However, integration is not all sunshine and roses. Linking systems takes time and money, especially if those systems do not communicate with each other as standard. And the more you link, the more complex the whole becomes. If something goes wrong somewhere for example, a malfunction in a link, it can affect multiple processes at once.

And then there is the risk of data overload. More data does not automatically mean more clarity. Without good reports or dashboards, you can still get lost in the numbers.

The trick is to integrate smartly. Start small: first link the systems that yield the most benefits. Think about which data is really important to your organization. And make sure you present that data in a comprehensible way, for example via clear dashboards.

The balance between technology and insight

The benefits of integration and data-driven working – more overview, faster decisions, better customer service are significant. But it does require a well-thought-out approach. Because no matter how advanced your systems are, it ultimately comes down to one thing: understanding what your data is telling you and responding to it smartly.

With the rise of the cloud, integration is no longer a choice, but a necessity. Only by connecting your systems and data can you maintain control of your organization in a world that is becoming increasingly digital and complex.

Vision on integration

Personally, I have noticed how we have come to take digitization for granted, while the complexity behind the scenes has increased enormously. I see integration not only as a technical challenge, but as a necessary step to make organizations future-proof. Without cohesion between systems and insight into your data, it is simply impossible for a company to manage effectively today.

In my own experience, I often see companies investing in the latest tools, only to realize later that these tools offer little value when used separately. It is only when you allow them to communicate with each other and apply smart analytics that their potential becomes apparent. Integration is therefore not just an IT project; it is a strategic foundation.

What motivates us is the power that arises when technology and insight truly come together. Companies that do this well don’t lag behind; they take the lead!
